Vasa-Spring Garden Mutual Insurance Company was founded in 1860 by Swedish immigrants settling in the Midwest. At the time, established insurance companies would not insure properties in newly settled rural areas.
Rather than accept that risk alone, neighbors came together to protect one another.
The original name of the organization translates to “The Society to Help the Needy in Fire Damage.” That purpose—shared responsibility in the face of loss—still defines the company today.
From the beginning, the company operated as a mutual insurer:
While tools, regulations, and coverage details have evolved over time, the core principles have not. Vasa-Spring Garden Mutual continues to operate under the same foundational model established more than a century and a half ago.
As communities grew, so did the company—expanding coverage, refining inspections, professionalizing claims handling, and strengthening financial reserves.
What did not change was the belief that:
Each generation of policyholders and directors has carried forward the responsibility to protect both individual members and the long-term strength of the mutual.
